I've got a set of 42 strand Gibraltar wires on my 6 1/2 x 14 right now
and loving it. Very snarey (sp?). 300 drummers = 300 opinions.

======================================Sam, Yep, I guess it's again a
matter of personal taste, and the characteristics of a particular Snare.
There are so many different versions of Supras throughout the years from
Ludwig, seamed shells, spun shells, Ludalloy, COB, different wires,
snare beds, etc, one can't classify all of them into one ball claiming
they all sound the same, as they surely don't.
Visiting my buddy in Florida a few years ago, and sitting in on his '65
Silver Ludwig set, with '65 5x14 Chrome over Aluminum Supra, I
immediately commented on 'Your snare sounds like ***, what the hell
did you do to it"?
With M-5 Diplomats on board, I was positive it wasn't the heads
contributing to the nasty sound I was hearing, I instinctively
immediately peeked under the snare, and sure enough, what do I see is a
set of 42 Strand Gretsch Snare Wires.
I tried to convice him to put the originals back on, but he said he
liked the 42 strand wires.
To me the snare sounded liked a buzzing mess, and killed the fundamental
tone, and quick attack, and crack that this otherwise great sounding
snare usually posesses.
