Okay, it's official. I'm getting old. I'm starting to bitch about things I used to hear my parents bitch about. One of the most annoying
things I ever have to face in my newly discovered old age is the absolute overabundance of shitty drivers.
I'm convinced that Nashville, Tennessee is the worlds foremost breeding ground for stupid ass motherfuckers behind the wheel. I think if you can stand upright, grunt loudly and have a pulse, the State of Tennnessee will gladly grant you a driver's license. That's GOT to be it. Because there are more ignorant, no-driving, cell phone using, no turn signal using dumbass SONS OF BITCHES driving around this town than any other town I've ever seen!!!
There....that feels better......
Jeezis H. Christ! I've never seen anything like it. I didn't go thru driver training in this state and I'd really love to be able to do it and see just how much they DON'T teach these idiots about the basic rules of the road. Tennessee isn't exactly world reknowned for being a hotbed of intellectual strength and vision but you would think people would have at least a LITTLE basic common sense!!! I'm losing faith in the future of this shithole, I'm tellin ya.
I'm no Einstein and don't know much about much but I DO have a good solid grasp of common sense. It irritates me to no end that I can be driving around town, watching what I'm doing and paying attention to everybody else (you HAVE to here or you'll die) and obeying the basic rules of the road while the roads are clogged with folks who climb in their little 4 wheeled cocoons and think that everything outside their cars is a fucking movie or something. Some of the dumbest sumbitches who have ever operated a motor vehicle live here. I'm serious.
Any of the RMMP Nashville contingent can back me up on this.....
I think it goes all the way to the top of government here. These are the same politicians who think it's a good idea to do major construction on ALL THREE of the major interstate highways that intersect in downtown Nashville essentially bringing the entire city to a halt. And they always have the vision to do it on a Friday afternoon to boot! Genius. While they're at it, they pinch pennies by using no reflective paint or tape on the roads. When it rains, the streets become a big shiny black oil slick with no lanes visible whatsoever. Pile ups and gridlock all over town because people can't see what lanes they're in. I have perfect eyesight and I can't tell half the time if I'm in my lane AND I'M ONE OF THE APPARENT FEW WHO EVEN CARE!! It's simply amazing to me. Let's create a state full of inept drivers then put them on roads where they can't tell where they're supposed to be. It's like asking blind people to shoot targets and then supplying them with wet gunpowder!!! They make so many boneheaded governmental decisions here that they can't possibly really CARE if the people here actually know how to drive or not. Just take their money and their picture and give 'em a card.
I know evetybody thinks the place they live has the worst drivers and somebody is gonna say "You think THAT'S bad? You should see the ones up here in Sheboygan!" but I'm tellin ya, if you've never driven here you owe it to yourself to visit, rent a car and just take a leisurely drive around town. You'll be shocked and amazed at what passes for a "qualified driver" here. It's enough to make a nice mellow guy like me get a little upset.....
Thank you. Rant mode off......
I've never been to Nashville, but when I've been to the US (I've been to Phoenix, NYC and all the way round Massachuessets or however you spell it, New Hampshire and Vermont, and I've always been amazed at how good the driver are. It pisses me off that everyone drives around alone in a 28-litre tank disguised as a Chevy, but at least they do it nicely! Of course, once we crossed the border into Canada it became a different matter entirely!
Where I come from, in sunny old Bradford, UK, we have a major driving problem. Everybody under the age of 30 (and quite a few above) sees every trip to the post office as being a race, and just to make it worse, we have a population split of about 50% white British people, and about 50% Asian people from India and Pakistan, which is great, everyone gets along grand, until they get in their cars, then it becomes a big competition. You take your car (the white guys tend to have European cars, VW Golfs, Citroen Saxos, Ford Focuses, and the Asian guys tend to have Japanese cars, Honda Civics, Toyota MR2s and the rich ones have Imprezas and Evos), put an exhaust with a diameter bigger than your head on, add a spoiler so big it blocks out the sun, and put weird stuff in your engine to make it louder (although rarely any faster!) and floor it. All day, every day, you can't do for a minute on a main road without two cars flying past at at least double the limit, often triple or more (standard limit's 30mph on most roads, it's not uncommon to see cars in the 100mph region coming past).
But it's not because the driving test is easy, it's because when you look through the court file in the local paper, every day at least 10 people are convicted of driving with no license and no insurance. And the usual punishment? A £50 fine. Guess what they're doing a few hours later...
Of course, if you want some real fun, head to Paris, drive round the Arc De Triomphe at the top of the Champs Elysees. There's nothing else that could ever come close to that thing!
