Drums getting swallowed up

Hope that subject was a decent attention grabber...
Anyone here ever get their drums huge-sounding and beautiful only to
show up at practice or a gig and have them sounding tiny and pathetic?
No matter how I tune them, my drums always sound like *** on a gig.
I swear there's no way without mic'ing to get them to sound good.
This mostly involves the bass drum, though; my snare usually sounds
okay. In my case, the bass drum only sounds good in my bedroom...
anywhere else -- even the living room -- and it just sounds like a
beater hitting plastic, with little to no actual presence. Doesn't
even matter how I tune it! It's really disheartening to own some of
the best sounding drums ever made when they don't sound any bigger
than anyone else's kit at a show.
Out,
Perry
