Heh heh. I'm in the minority, I guess... my kit for my main gig is the
Gretsch Club Rock kit (Bonham sizes -- 26 kick, 14 rack, 16/18 floors).
I use both floors 90% of the time. There are a few places where the
drum riser is too small to fit both floors, but other than that, I've
never had a problem. We play mainly larger stages though, out of
necessity (drums, two guitars, bass, cello, violin, keyboards,
occasional viola).
When I don't use the 2nd floor, it's not too big of a deal. None of
my fills are orchestrated to the point that it's problematic, but there
are a few patterns that are based on the 1 up / 2 down configuration,
so it requires a bit of thinking to figure it out. Not quite as "fun"
as when we do acoustic gigs and I use just a kick + snare =)
