Re: Slow day at work ;-) Opinions on multiple FT's

I have always preferred two FTs. My set up for about 10 years was 10 and 12
racks with 14 and 15 Floor toms on a rack mount or double tom stand. Now,
and for the last about 5 years, I have used 14 and 16 inch floor toms with
legs and the Pearl iso-mount feet (Yes...they actually do what they say).

Not sure why I prefer the two floor toms except it is probably because of
the extra note/voice/color you gain from having this set up. Or it could
just be that I grew up heavily influenced by late 70s and most of 80s rock.
If you go back and look at those kits, almost everyone has two floors...but
also two bass drums, which I don't find a use for.

With that in mind, there are a good number of gigs that I don't use 2 floors
on. I carry two floors with Chesnutt, but on most gigs in town, I use a
simple 4 piece kit (12 rack and 14 floor). This is either for lack of
space, but mainly because the other toms aren't needed.

Yesterday, I did a rehearsal for NYE with a Musik Mafia Soul/R&B/Funk girl,
using my entire 6 piece (2 rack/2 floors) set-up and will probably use it on
the gig. The main reason for it though was an excuse to set up for the
first time my new Taye kit (TourPro in White Pearl) that I will be taking on
the road with Chesnutt in 2006.

After that rehearsal, I did a country gig that only needed the 4 piece kit
and actually could have been done with a 3 piece kit (sans the 12).

Sorry to ramble. Guess the point is use what you like as long as you take
into consideration what the gig is and the kit requirements you need to feel
comfortable doing it.

There is my take.
