Pro Tools, Cakewalk/Sonar or Cubase are all good choices.
PC - which allows you more choices of software & hardware.
Desktop - because you may want to make changes to your hardware
configuration.
Mixer - The app you use will probably have a mixer - you just need enough
inputs to the PC
One thing to consider is how loud the computer is. Most newer systems are
pretty quiet. Some people find that to still be too much noise. Aside from
making the PC as quite as possible, you could possibly stick it in the next
room with just monitor, keyboard & mouse in the room with you. Or, you could
stick the PC in a soundproofed case/cabinet.
Personally, I prefer to avoid the whole PC/Recording issue by using a
digital Multi-track (Fostex MR-8). It records to a Compact Flash card (you
can't use the cheap CF cards, they aren't fast enough). When I'm done
recording, I pull the card from the MR-8, stick it in the card reader on my
PC and pull the data into Cakewalk/Sonar. I use a one gig card, which is
enough for one multi-tracked song. If you are just doing the drum part, one
gig is much more than enough (if you're just playing to a click). If you
want to play to material someone has sent you, it just as easy to dump
tracks from your PC app back onto the card so you can have it play while you
do the drums.
