Never had Canondonk but I'm a big fan of Duvel, Leffe and Hoegaarden, all of which have a pretty high alcoholic content. I think that's just a byproduct of the belgian brewing process. For decent US brewed belgian style beer, Ommegang is pretty good.
I hate Hoegaarden. Not sure why, because I'm a big fan of a similar beer, Erdinger (but mainly for the fantastic glasses that it comes in). Duvel and Leffe are wonderful, as is Chimay. If you want the perfect 'chilling out on a sunny afternoon' beer see if you can locate some raspberry beer, I prefer Timmermans to Leifmanns but both are wonderful.

i certainly dont like Hoegaarden as much as duvel or leffe, but it's a hell of a lot better than most beers and easier to find. my non-belgian backup is usually bass or smithwicks. i hate how stella artois is pushed at most bars as 'belgian beer'. sure, its brewed there, but it's not belgian-style, it's belgium's version of budweiser. yuk.
It might not be Leffe standard but it's a hell of a lot better than Budweiser! I'd also be inclined to say it was much better than Bass. Speaking of Budweiser, you ever had Budvar? It's what Budweiser tasted like before it was watered down for the American market. It's the best normal lager in the universe, to my knowledge.
