I also recommend the Microsoft AntiSpyware program. I haven't found
anything else that works as well to stop spy and adware. Also, if the
programs Steve mentioned don't do the removal job completely, there is a
program called "Hijack This" that I love. You can find it here :

I have had a few things that would not die with "AdAware" or "Spybot Search
and Destroy", and "Hijack This" found them. It is not very user friendly,
so if you need help with it, let me know or do a search for "Hijack This
forum".

One other thing I recommend is to disable the "Messenger" service. This has
nothing to do with the IM program, but is a program used by network admins
to send system messages to computers. If this is a home computer you
probably don't need it and should be turned off as it can be used to produce
pop-ups. Here are the instructions for that:
