I don't agree with that. I've seen far too many shows (mostly drum seminars) in which the CD player, and yes, minidisc player started skipping or stopping. Most of the problems people have with laptops are due to all the other crap on them that interferes with the music software.

A pro will have a separate partition drive that is set up with a
stripped down startup system that runs the music software and only the
music software-- no internet or gaming drivers, no extensions or
extraneous anything that has to do with anything other than running the
music software and interface. This clears the path of any possible
system conflicts and clears all the ram for the music apps, midi and
interface drivers.

Yes, $h!t happens and even the best machine, set up in the best possible
manner might glitch. Happens to NASA, it'll happen to you. :-) But
I've seen far too many CD players, minidiscs, and DAT machines, mounted
in isolation rack cases, flip out and cause embarrassment to an artists
or clinician, to want to trust them over a properly set up laptop.

I would go with a flash drive or similar player, before a CD player.
I'm seeing more and more artists riders that are including, "stereo
direct-ins for iPod."

Did I mention I always had two CD players! Heh.

I agree with you that most problems with laptops are caused by all the extraneous crud people install. Since I started using a laptop that is ONLY used for performances, I have not had a problem. I DJ from my laptop as well as running DMX software without a glitch.

But you must agree that two CD players are cheaper than any single laptop.

Interesting idea. I may have to get an iPod!
