He is missing a bit more variety of colours in his palette.

Not quite, please re-read my question: it's like asking which *type* of
new guitar *you* would get. You may think a musician shouldn't base his
decision to purchase a new instrument on what other musicians would do,
but if that musician is a beginner (my friend is) and is a bit
overwhelmed by the huge choice out there and doesn't even know where to
start to find something that would fill better the "gaps" in his
toolbox (in fact he may not be sure where those gaps are), knowing that
most people (including the many more experienced and professional
musicians in this n.g.) would go for such and such choice, may point
him in the right direction. For example, so far most people have
suggested a bigger crash. I don't know, I'm a bassist, but maybe that
means that, in general, once you've covered the smaller / faster side
of things with a splash, it's a good idea to cover the fuller / warmer
side with a bigger crash rather than add a 14" crash that will fall
somewhere between the splash and 16" crash but won't actually widen
your palette.

The thing is, he does want a new crash now. He's got the money, he's in
this for the fun of it and a big part of the fun is getting new toys.
Put it this way: he doesn't really *need* a new crash, he just wants
one, but he'd rather part with his money to get something that he will
actually put to good use once it's there, hence the consultation.

Sure, but as I said I wasn't looking for "go for the XXX 18" Medium
Thin Dark Studio Crash", but which *type* of crash one would normally
add next. He asked me to ask about a specific line (Sabian XS20) and
possible alternatives because it has the right price and it's a
different brand and construction method (I think cast vs. stamped?)
from what he has, so since it looks good on paper it would be nice to
know also other people's opinion on those and then, as you rightly
suggest, take that opinion lightly, which doesn't mean dismissing it
completely, especially if, as it's some times the case, you see a sort
of general consensus among those in the know.

That sounds like a very good suggestion that I'll definitely pass on to
him.
Many thanks,
