As far as where yours was made, it will depend on the year and a few
little details that the websites devoted to these don't ever seem to get
right. According to your serial, yours was made in mid-88 in either
Japan or USA. If your headstock says "International Series" on it, it
was cut & finished in Japan, but assembled in the US. These are
extremely rare sinceFenderUSA at that time was little more than an
office and a small warehouse with VERY limited production in the US. No
'International' but with theFenderUSA neckplate AND an E serial number
means it was made in Japan entirely. Most Fenders made in 88 were
produced in Japan including almost all of theHMline. Not much
difference between the two, they both play like butter and are
outstanding guitars that can easily cross between the 'RealStrat' sound
and an 80s shredder. The single coil pickups in the HMs are standard
FenderStratpickups - same as in all their standards of the era. The
Bridge is a Dimmarzio Super 3. The coil split doesn't sound exactly like
aStratbridge, but it's close enough for most people who use these.

Very interesting, I will take your advice and try another shop. Great
picture, once I figured out the URL. That one looks just about identical
to mine with the Kahler, HSS and maple neck, although mine have a black
body. I did not know that the single coils are standard Stratocaster
ones, they have such good tone I thought them to be a little hotter than
standard.

Actually, you can still purchase parts for the Kahler tremolo that
came with the HM Strat series. Parts for the "Spyder" as it is called,
are available on the Kahler website, albeit a tad on the expensive
side.
You could also fit a Floyd Rose on it, but it will require a small
amount of routing on the face of the guitar to fit the tremolo, about
1/2 an inch on the corners where the tremolo sits. I only know this
because I have replaced an old Spyder with a Floyd Rose.
Check Ebay for the Fender HM strat series, or Heavy Metal Strat. I
have bought and sold many of them on there over the past several
years. If it's just a neck you require, you can always buy a used HM
strat, and just take the neck if it's in better condtion and stick
your old neck on and sell it again. I own a few of the HM strats, and
I love them.
