Fingering is base on were you come from and were you are going, not on
a fret/string number.

The "pattern rule" is absolute and knows no exceptions. How's that for
a sweeping statement ? :)

Seriously, sticking to patterns is a fantastic way to learn your way on
the fretboard. Once you're really confortable across the neck, you may
wish to start experiencing with various fingering. And you may wish to
concentrate more on major, minor and pentatonic scales. Far more
usefull then the chromatic scale.
