Speaking as a proud member of the country who invented the language

thing people do when they play bossa nova is singing in
Portuguese...please don't do that! I cant stand hearing Diana Krall
singing in Portuguese for more than 20 seconds...
But the English lyrics for the Jobim songs are so inferior to the
...and, many people find it sweet and/or charming when non native
english speakers sing english lyrics, (if they are talented singers)
Astrud, Dida, Lisa Ono, and a russian friend of mine all come to mind.
So why do you find it annoying when a good singer like Krall sings
Kevin Van Sant
info, music, videos, etc...
Yes because she is not singing Portuguese - she says the right words
but she the accent is beyond terrible... any guy that lives for two
weeks in Brasil can do better than that! And she is a wll known and
acclaimed artist she should be careful with that...
I am not so sure the same applies to English because its a much global
language and a lot of people around the world starts learning English
very early in life and also listening to lyrics or seeing moveis or tv
show in English. But I have the same opinion - there's a very popular
pseudo indie singer here in Portugal that sings in English with a
terrible accent and writes terrible lyrics and I think he shouldn't do
it. Usually lyrics written by English or American musicians are vastly
superior to English lyrics written by people from other countries imo.
Huh???? Man, in general, the lyrics in MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira)
are vastly superior to anything I've heard in any other country.
I mean, composers like Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento,
Vinicius de Moraes, Joao Bosco, Cartola, Nelson do Cavaquinho, Aldir
Paulo Cesar Pinheiro, Ivan Lins, Caymmi, Jobim himself, etc, etc,
I remember Metheny saying that when he lived in Brazil (in the late
early 90's) he could not believe how beautiful were the lyrics in
he was already familiar with the music for years. All the Clube de
stuff, Chico, Ivan, Jobim, etc...
(Metheny learned some Brazilian-Portuguese during that period. Not
If he still speaks).
O que esta' a passar, gajo? :-)
