The
scale, mode, chord scale thing as the first move without really trying
to play and understand what you are listening to, is the route I would
recommend not taking; but that's just me. I don't really think it is
all that necessary to "know" what makes it all tick at first. Often
the knowing can get in the way and actually inhibit learning in the
early part of the game.
i know i shouldn't post to this group anymore as i can't say anything
without any number of internet virtuosi getting ready to pounce, but i
agree with what you just said 100%, tony. i'm still recovering from
taking the route you just described. there's more truth in that five
minute raney video than in four years at most music schools.
