I never noticed this before but in WMP11 you can "share" the whole
windows media player library across the network

This is supposed to work with an Internet radio too, and according to the
instructions (I haven't tried it) you can mark any folder as shared, it
doesn't have to be the WMP library. But what worries me is that sharing a
folder would mean that it would be shared with the entire Internet.

I dont know about the Internet radio, but as far as the WMP library
you can specifically say what computers you will allow on your network
to see that instance of WMP. Or you can check a box that lets any
computer on your home network come in and see that WMP. In both cases
computers that have no acces to your home network will not have access
anyway, so the WMP sharing is limited by visible networks. You can
also limit what content you share based on parental rating, number of
stars, media types, etc. But unlike file/folder sharing you dont need
to create the same user ID's ID on the target box (when using XP to
Vista), it doesnt check the user ID of the client user coming in to
look at another machines WMP. Opening up your copy of WMP to any
computer that wants it is possible but not recommended (if you bring
that computer to work or other networks), I did open up mine llike
that but its only for fixed machines on the house network, it wont
share outside of the home workgroup. I opened up the laptops but only
to specific machines, not everybody.

I'm very happy with this feature. I was contemplating buying some
sort of centralized "media server" for my home so I could get at all A/
V/photo media from anywhere around the house. But this works great
and is free and is much better than creating simple file/folder shares
as you are able to share the library ID3 tag and playlist information
too kept in the WMP database. I dont know if Apple Quicktime or the
iTunes media equivalents to WMP can do this too, but I'm finding it to
be ultra cool to hook computers to TV/Stereos anywhere in the house
and get to any other media library all with a common interface/
management method. Kudos to MSFT on this one.
