I also think it's arrogant hubris on your part to think that you should be able to do this without any arranging training, experience or study.
Who do you think you are?
IMO You belittle the efforts of people who have actually gone to the trouble of learning how to do this.
And if you walk in there with a really bad chart those musicians will remember you as that guy who wasted their time for years to come.

The teacher who suggested this to you seems suspect to me too.

If you've really got 10 months to do this and you're really interested in learning how to do it right, then start studying now. That's actually quite doable.

But you made it sound like this was going to be happening much sooner than that.

It's also greatly naive thinking that you can bypass learning how to write for a traditional big band and go right to Maria Schneider style writing. An extraordinary genius might be able to pull something like that off. But you don't strike me as fitting that description.

Sorry Paul, but that's the way I see it.
Perhaps I'm still misinterpreting your situation and/or previous training.
