My PC seems to have picked up some particularly nasty malware or
virus. I downloaded the Windows malware removal tool but it just shuts
down before it can get started. I've run adaware and spysweeper and
that gets rid of some stuff but not permanently. The stuff comes
back.
I've got a lot of strange pop up ads, very slow start up and
performance, This PC has just wigged out! Do I have to format the
drive to get rid of this? Suggestions appreciated...
btw... I've heard that these virus/malware problems can travel via
music sites and files. Does anyone know if there's any truth to that?
I'm wondering if I back up my music library and reinstall it later if
I'll be reinstalling the malware or virus along with the files.
I just rid my 2 computers of AVG 8.0. Completely bogged my system
down and made internet browsing very unpleasant because of 2 apps that
could not be disabled. A complete system hog. I switched over to
Avira and both computers are much happier.

I've been using AVG anti-virus and firefox for my broswer for over 4 years
now and haven't had any problems at all.
Same here with AVG Free. I did attempt (twice) to convert to the
full-up AVG with the firewall and the software that graded sites,
whatever they called it. This software, on both attempts (paid for it
twice) was a total disaster because it slowed down my PC to the point
I didn't want to use it. I'm back to AVG Free 8.5, living behind my
router firewall, and keeping my fingers crossed.
On the music backup scene, my jazz collection is over 200 gigs, and I
use a USB HDD for backup. I don't run the PC with it plugged in except
to update the backup. Again fingers crossed it doesn't get
contaminated if I get something bad.
I've tried McAfee firewall and Zone Alarm. Both slow the computer too
much for me. I've considered a hardward firewall, but haven't gone
there, yet. If anybody has a really good solution that doesn't de-nut
the computer, please share!
