This has been discussed a zillion times here (hint: google archive),
but I do have one "newish" thought: how you pick completely defines
you as a guitar player. Therefore, as an intermediate player (not
speaking of you personally), I think you should not be thinking about
the majority or consensus view or the fastest player or the one with
most fluid technique. You have to start from how you want to sound and
what is right for you. If you can't think and be creative fast, then
having Bruno or Gambale's right hand won't help you a bit. If you love
a full round sound, maybe you should investigate Jim Hall's technique.
There has to be more of a personal goal to each investigation, and it
has to do with the sound you want to come out when you play, and whose
playing touches you.

I agree. I think the music sort of dictates the technique. Depending on what
it is you are trying to play, different picking methods would be of more or
less actual utility.    ...joe

I have found a universal method that works for me no matter what type
of music IO am playing. It worked well for me during my days as a
studio player where one day I am playing country, fusions, hard rock,
pop etc.and the next day playing something completely different and
maybe somewhat "off the wall" And an occasional jazz thing. Most of
the stuff I did was for movies and TV sound tracks. Very little
records... I mean CDS. Didn't play much jazz in LA except for an
occasional gig at Donte's in someone else's band. A few times, I got
to play for Sarah Vaughn when she stopped by to sit in. Wonderful
lady. Everytime I played there if she was in town she used to come
by. A few others too.
