I agree with this but I would say that not everyone has the same
potential in any given area of endeavor, no matter how much early
training they get. You have to bring a certain aptitude -even an
average aptitude- to what you are doing, and of course you have to
really want it real bad too. If you have that and you put in all that
work you will develop your skills to a very high level. Aptitude might
be a better word than " talent" which is often misleading. The
aptitude you have for a particular activity is probably in the DNA.
Yeah, I agree with that. Like I said, some kids learn to read and
spell at age two, and others do it at age four. Some walk at 8
months, and some kids can't walk until 15 months.
So you are absolutely right about that and I completely agree.
I think the point of these "talent is over-rated" studies is that
people tend to over-emphasize this 'aptitude' and under-emphasize the
work that goes into it.
From my experience, I totally agree with that because people around mehas almost always talked about 'talent' when talking about high
performers and almost never mention the amount of work that these
people put in, or how early they had started.
Nobody really ever talked about that as I recall... The emphasis was
always on how early these people were able to accomplish something
more so than the work they put in up until that time.
I think it's great that people are actually conducting studies and
shedding some light on this subject instead of invoking the
mysterious, mythic thing called 'talent' to explain everything...
