I think the logic went like this: Greg saw a story on Fox it had him boiling over with rage. I pointed out that this is what Fox news, and shriek radio, intend to do. Their intent by the stories they select and the ways they present them, is to encourage outrage. CNN and Fox and the New York Times for that matter--they all cover many of the same stories. But Fox's intent is to zazz it up and make it more engertaining, make it more "exciting", and to appeal to the interests of their "average listenter". One predominat of the ways they do that is by baying at the moon. It's amazing to find them working a "wacky liberal" angle into the most mundane dog-bite story. But they manage to it. (Insert Fox "eye-rolling" transition...)
CNN, regardless of the liberal bias they exhibit as evidenced by shriek radio commentary, doesn't attempt to make their news more interesting by appealing to back-woods conservative isolation, aka "rage".
Rubert Murdoch made his newspaper kingdom in Britain by showing bare-breasted women on page two. It sold. When Gingrich rewrote the FCC laws with Murdoch to make ownership of US media by non-citizens, I'm sure they discussed ways to make the news more "interesting". Then Murdoch offered Newt six million for his "memoirs", and the law passed--a miracle! Of course congress made him give Murdoch back 3 or 4 million of it so it wouldn't seem like blatant graft--just graft.
Can you imagine a Chinese (or Russian) triliionaire buying NBC. And then loading everyday's news with what a great friend to the US China is? Legally, they can do it whenever they like. Thanks, Newt!
I listen to shriek radio not infrequently, on the way to the store or short drives. I always ponder what a miserable life it is to get up each moring and pore over the paper trying to find something to feign outrage over. I periodically listen to some Bob&Ken team out of LA and every once in a while I find them really trying to work up a head of steam over absolutely nothing. I pity them.
