However, note that this is his gutless (in my opinion, anyway) manner
of dealing with those who disagree with him.   His Finn-ness kill-
filed me simply because I wouldn't cave into his way of thinking about
late period Miles Davis.  Since he doesn't have the courtesy to read
what I write, I don't care too much about writing about him with
courtesy.

We've all said things online we were ashamed of. Joe said some
derogatory things about me and my book and I reacted like an imbecile
and total fool, saying very nasty things about Joe's playing and
personality. No matter what was said to me, what I said was uncalled
for and I should have just let the statements go but instead I lashed
out. Anyway, I've apologized to him several times but I guess the
damage is done. It's too bad really because despite his claims that we
have little in common, I think he and I share a love for jazz guitar --
despite me also liking Brent Mason ;) -- and in the interest of
sticking together in the small community of the jazz world I think
it'd be great if we could all forgive and forget. Life's too short to
harbor a lifetime of grudges and resentment.

To Joe and others I've offended - I'm truly sorry. Have a great
holiday and New Year.

Jack

P.S.

Jay, I tried to email you but it bounced.

well i guess it's certainly a good time of year to bury the hatchets
(preferably not in your fellow poster's forehead) and extend the olive
branches! FWiW, the very first time i posted here way-back-when, i
said something about Terje Rypdal and how much i respected the idea
that he could still be influenced well into being an established
artist by something as low-brow as Van Halen, and i also negatively
contrasted this with the cliche of the "moldy fig" in jazz....needless
to say a lot of folks here took me as troll and spat back....most of
these people i've since had pleasant ,civil and even downright
friendly interactions with. Everybody has their blindspots and
absolutely everybody exaggerates exponentially along the lines of
their interests and experiences. I've had my spats here and elsewhere
online (pretty much only with Joe here FWiW), but i try hard to draw
the line at insulting someone's playing and whatnot.....i'll have a go
at what someone writes that i disagree with if i think it's worth the
(almost always embarrassing and futile) effort to do so..\but in the
end, i'm a pretty optimistic pessimist, and i guess i just think that
most people in the arts are taking at least one common step towards
trying to engage something of a special place in life.....the details
and ideology i'll haggle when i feel mine is getting stepped on, but
the people for the most part i have to say i reserve judgment and hope
to err on the side that there's probably more good than bad there even
if we always seem to *** heads and disagree.....i can agree to
disagree, but i really feel cheapened in myself if i have to actually
start attacking people personally or questioning their level of
commitment based solely--with the caveat that it's not something truly
awful, racist, hateful etc--on their artistic perspective.
okay, best wishes to all
