Pitch can be measured. You might even say that a singer who hits a
perfect A 440 every time is a better, or to use your terminology,
a "more advanced" singer than someone who sings their A's as 435
or 446 or something. Pitch is objective and measurable. If
somebody can't accurately sing pitches in tune what you are
calling the "artistic content" of their performance is going to
suffer.

Perhaps. A computer generated voice can hit perfect pitch every
single time. Is a computer performance therefore more advanced art
than, say, Ella Fitzgerald who often started notes off-pitch? Yet
I would predict that the perfectly in-pitch computer would sound
sterile and boring, while Ella sounds vibrant and beautiful because
of those "errors."

Milton Babbitt, Olly Wilson, Pril Smiley and Jozef Malovec were among
the pioneers of electronic music. They were in the vanguard of a
great advance both in technical and aesthetic terms. Electronic music
is still around too. This has nothing to do with the artistry of Ella
Fitzgerald and it's a mistake to characterize her techniques as
errors.

Oy.

A person's experience while listening to music is not the music
itself.

Well, actually, yes it is. IMHO, YMMV, etc.

In the event that you may be trying to be funny here,

I wasn't.

I'll play along. As I suggested above music is something that can be
quantified. Sound waves have particular characteristics and in our
digital age these qualities can be identified, measured, defined and
described right down to the most minute and inaudible wave forms.
Sounds exist in a very real, physical sense. The experience of
listening to sounds is another matter. Music is said to have certain
evocative qualities and listeners report various emotional responses
upon listening. The subjective nature of the feelings they report are
part of their personal experience; music it ain't. .....joe

Music- and all art- is what is perceived in the communication between
the artist and the audience. You can quantify properties of music, but
that is not the same as quantifying music. The whole is different than
the sum of the parts, to quote Wolfgang Köhler.

p.s. Don't worry if this stuff doesn't wrap up into a nice neat
package. The problem of defining art and related aesthetic issues
continues to be controversial even after centuries of development and
debate.

No point in worrying.
