Moving to New York or any of the other great cities in the world is a
fantastic thing for a young man to do. I recommend it highly. I've
lived in several and visited many others.
But plan on finding some other way to make a living besides playing
jazz guitar. (That's not a criticism of your guitar playing; it's just
a fact of life.)
Before you go to NYC, rent "Midnight Cowboy" and watch it a few times.
Also, learn Summertime in a few other keys, and find some other ways
to harmonize it. Maybe start by learning the descending chromatic 2-5
reharm. Play some phrases in double-stops, fat chords, octaves, etc/.
Change your tone to emphasize certain notes. With such a simple song,
my experience is that without a band it's necessary to switch up keys,
tempos, textures, and harmonizations in order to maintain interest for
four minutes. Your version sounds fine but is monochromatic.
Absolutely agree with Tom (but not sure you need to watch it a few times,
it's a pretty bizarre flick! Dustin Hofman's "Ratzo Rizzo" character IS a
classic though!) You could watch Taxi as the drummer in that scene Gene
Perla was a real person (I used to see him playing on the street like that
ALL the time when I lived and worked near Times Square in the 80s, and back
then it WAS all porno theaters. Nowadays it's gone a bit "Disney").
There ARE opportunities that crop up once you get here though, and if you've
got the fire in you to do it, being here WILL help you to become a better
player. Here's an apartment listing that was sent to me a week ago on one
of the jazz mailing lists I get (I'm sure it was snatched up in the first
hour, if not minutes!)
"room for rent in bright, sunny (newly painted) apartment.
Am currently living with my wife in midtown, but keeping my former apartment
as an office space. It's a nice big uptown space. All my personal effects
and furniture have been moved out but am keeping all my professional stuff
here: computer & stereo equipment, LP & CD collection, book library, etc.
Currently have one room for rent, hopefully to an individual somewhere in
the music or media business who needs an office at a reasonable price in
Manhattan. This is a very large (four bedroom), sunny apartment on the
upper, upper east side. Although it's 116th St, it's actually very
convenient to almost every music venue in the city, and just a few minutes
from midtown. Am just one block east of the Lexington Avenue stop.
This is a very nice corner apartment with lots of sunshine, plus a full
kitchen and bathroom in the apartment itself. It's a vintage building, but
the electricity & plumbing were redone shortly before I moved in a few years
ago.
It would be ideal for someone else in the music business, since I have a
vast amount of music-related resources, but would consider anybody from any
profession (short of criminal). References requested. Am asking $600.
Thanks!
Anyway, you get the idea. It is possible to find a cheap place if you're
vigilant.
Musically Yours,
Rick Stone
