One not-so-obvious part of his tone is that he always runs a Rat
distortion pedal in his chain, with the gain turned all the way down
to act as a mid range boost. Perhaps that boost is enhancing the pick
attack that you're hearing.

It's much simpler than that. The effect you are talking about in "How
Deep Is the Ocean" on "Intuit" is just Kurt holding the pick in such a
way that the thumb brushes the string a little bit ahead or behind the
pick attack depending on direction. Joe Pass did it a lot. Of course,
it's a little clumsy with a big pick. It's similar to the effect blues
guitarists use for harmonics like Clapton on "Leila".

Definitely thumb-produced harmonics although I hear it coming more
from Tal Farlow than Joe Pass. Kurt's a big fan of the octopus.
