I never used the built-in mike of my webcam. Always fed all audio into a
mixer and then into the PC.
Even with a crappy webcam you can get great audio. You can separate audio
and video completely when using a webcam, for you can choose the audio
source in Windows Movie Maker.

Thanks for all the info 5#.
I made some videos using my webcam video and the built-in mike.
The sound quality sucks, even using the higher resolution.
I'm about to invest some $$$ to buy an external cam and a good mic.

My Canon FS 100 records to memory disc (4 Giga or 8 Giga). I can put the
disc in a laptop just like that. And it even works speedy with USB. This
camcorder was designed for Youtube :)
After transferring the files to my laptop I can import them into
Moviemaker
straight away. No hassle. A typical guitar clip uploaded to Youtube is sub
50 MB after converting to WMV. The original file will be 4-5 times as big.

Hey Dan,
Thanks for calling me a "great" sound engineer. Should I send you your
$5.00 now or give it to you when I see you? Chuckle. . . .
But seriously, I'm just trying to figure out this video thing and with
all
the competing formats, it does get complicated.
Especially pay attention to that last part about the codecs you use to
compress the video after you edit it. This makes a HUGE difference in
how
it winds up looking on YouTube. I'm still experimenting with it, but
have
found some that work better than others.
Also BEWARE the Sony hard-disk and DVD cameras. They record in AVCHD not
HDV, and as I found out AVCHD is really not supported very well by most
of
the editing programs, pro or consumer. Stick with SD or HDV for now and
you'll have a MUCH easier time.
Musically Yours,
Rick Stone
