Im looking at L-5Cs and the big price tags, and Im thinking a smart way to
get the L-5 sound I want would be to take an L-7C and have a luthier cut the
top to install a fat sounding humbucker. What Im trying to get is the woody
warm and fat tone my friend gets from his vintage L-5P that someone long ago
cut and installed a humbucker just as I describe (who would cut an acoustic
L-5 these days?).
Anyway, Im wondering what the cost and dangers are in taking this approach..
And, for the record, I couldnt bring myself to cut a vintage L-7, so it
would be one of the recent reissue L-7Cs.
Thoughts?

hey steve
been there-done that-wouldn't do it again...
an excellent luthier did a beautiful job installing a built in
humbucker on my 1961 L-7C
it was a perfect job-the braces untouched(uncut)-it looked like it
came from gibson that way
but...an acoustic L7 is meant to be very resonant, & though the
cutting of the top should deaden the resonance somewhat, & thus the
feedback, it fed back more than it ever did with a floating PU, & as
much as i loved that guitar prior to that mod, that's how much i hated
it afterwards & sold it after playing it for 12 years
i also had a 1959 L4C with a floating PU that was amazing unplugged &
the opposite of amazing plugged in
btw, even if gibson makes you one w/a built in, unless they brace it
differentlyit will feedback, plus they are never prompt with anything
custom - i am still waiting for my 1974 L5CES w/ one pickup (actually
i was talked out of ordering it by someone at Manny's who said that it
would take years-perhaps if i had ordered it i would have had a unique
& valuable guitar, but most 1970's gibsons were not memorable or even
good IMO
in your situation i would look for something designed for & built with
amplification in mind, & contrary to other opinions, i do not think
that floating pickups are worth very much-IMO they are fine in really
quiet settings & otherwise feedback way too much & truly don't have
the sound of a built in-which i think one needs when playing w/drums,
etc
also, most of the recordings live or studio that we all seem to revere
& cherish, were recorded on archtops with built in pickups
i think that the full sized amplified archtop w/a great sound &
minimal or no feedback is just a collective dream we all share...
my 2 cents...
buona fortuna!
