Of course you are right, Jimmy, and so is Michael. I've gotten many
of the same types of things out of the forum that he has.
At first, I paid a lot of attention to the theory talk - boy, that was
largely a waste of time. I also participated in some of the
arguments, without even realizing I didn't know what it was all
about. I got past that, and now I just enjoy the entertainment and
information factor.
Because of this forum, I've traded emails with some of the guys here,
including you, Jimmy. I've received good advice and made friends.
I've been turned onto Genil Castro and a bunch of other less known but
very wonderful players.
You, Jimmy, I don't worry about - you are a tough guy with a good
heart. You mixed it up in the metronome thread really well and later
commented that a lot of people talk a lot of shit on the internet - in
other words - no hard feelings.
Jack, on the other hand, I worry about. Jack is at once a very
sensitive guy and very in your face. Sort of can dish it out, but not
take it. I don't mean that as a cut. Despite the fact that he
promotes products here, he's one of the most generous and helpful guys
here. He also has some of the strongest opinions and some of the
strongest reactions to criticism. It's part of his extremely
passionate approach to music. It's gotta be all or nothing for Jack.
Jack has my immense respect... years ago here in RRMGJ he used to bust
balls left and right and got in many arguments, though I can no longer
remember over what. Then he changed and stayed out of troubled threads
- for years. He totally avoided getting into arguments and stayed true
to that until he was hit with attacks/arguments/whatebver you want to
call them against himself.
Not to mention the obvious: "guys were really into breaking Jack's
balls about various things," precisely because they could count on
getting a reaction out of him...the laws of the playground don't
really change that much as we get older.
I give Jack credit for the many years of not responding. I watched him
closely and commented here over the years about how we all should take
the higher road like Jack. But over the last few years, Jack has moved
into music as part of his rep... the SOS books (everybody remember
what he went thru with that, publishing, binding, distrib?). And his
gear reviews. And more recently, his teaching vids. And now column
writing.
He's poured alot of resources (time, effort, money) into music trying
to eek out a niche in a crowded field, so when JoeF taked about JAZ
hijacking sheets of sound for commercial purposes, JAZ got ticked.
Heck, I'm no longer into irritating anybody here on purpose, but if
Henry Johnson showed up here again, I'd laugh my ass off when he
inevitably became offended because the collective group didn't worship
at his altar - talk about thin-skinned...
Leave, stay, come back, whatever...the fact that there's so much
discussion about it, including from people who have been fed up with
the group, shows that there's still something of interest here. I've
checked out the Gear Page and the notion that it's somehow a superior
group puzzles me.
By the way, five will get you ten that Jack is lurking right now.
He may well be. For some reason we all put more stock into this NG
than it deserves. OK, I don't as much because I have no rep to protect
and no music heritage to uphold... hmmm, being a no-talent gearhound
does have its privileges :)-
My point is folks care about what others think of them. So if he's
lurking, it's only because of that natural reaction.
Be well, Jack.
Agreed.
Greg
PS. And Jaye - I have respect for you as well
.
