Re: Playing Acoustically

"But, honestly, I can't imagine any commercial room that wouldn't
require SOME light amplification."

I know it seems kind of bold and unlikely, but music was performed
this way for centuries before electricity.
It can still happen.
It requires some prerequisite work on sound projection.
If you always use an amp, you'll never give yourself an opportunity to
work on it.

"House concerts, maybe.
But even in a small room the people fifteen or twenty feet back
wouldn't
hear much or anything without some amplification."

Don't know what you mean by a "House concert", but the small room is
ideal.
People will be able to hear it. I do it pretty regularly and people
really like it.
They appreciate hearing actual acoustic music.
Sadly, it's a novel experience that they don't often get.

"And if they get to
talking a lot instead of listening, fuggetaboutit."

Well..You have to play well, you have to "lure" them in, rather than
bombard them.
It's very rewarding on a lot of levels to do this.
But it takes a kind of committed view of it as an "art".
It's not easy and you have to learn how to get your sound out there.
Sometimes I think I'm wasting my time with this crazy idea of no amps,
but then somebody in the back of a noisy room comes up to tell me how
much they liked it and I know I'm doing the right thing.

Try to get a day time open rehearsal scenario going at a coffee house
to work it out.
After a few times you'll start to be able to get your sound across.
