I had many of these books from "that CD that was floating around" but
got 'em anyway just so I have everything. I was thinking about the
utility of it all. I remember being at a jam and a trumpet player had
the pdf files on a laptop and was able to get to them quickly. Does
anyone know of a piece of software that would work in this
application? What was the name of that music stand that had a viewer
built in? There must be a 3rd party version for a laptop.

If, by 'music stand with a viewer' you mean a Music Pad Pro. I have one
of these since last March. They are still $900 AFAIK. It took me the
better part of the summer to get books that I scanned myself and some
from 'that CD that was floating around' on there. It's quite picky as to
what size/proportions your files have. Also, some of the books on 'that
CD' are scanned at too low a resolution. I guess what I am trying to say
is that you should not only expect to spend a grand or so but also quite
some time outfitting it with music.

Having said that, that thing rocks! I have probably about 5000+ tunes in
it - both originals and scans of fake books. All on a 1GB USB
Flashdrive. It's not even half full. One of the things I really like is
that you can search for tunes by name, composer or style - but you have
to tag every tune by hand. It's also a bit more sturdy than a laptop.
