Its not age...its more likely that these people do not have the type
of talent that would have attracted your attention, therefore, u dont
know them. If someone is really talented..we still tend to know about
them. No?

Notice how guys/gals like Tommy Emmanuel, Dianna Krell, or even the
occasional opera singer are never seen on Leno or Letterman. But back
when Johnny Carson had the Tonight Show he often had jazz and
classical variety. The current entertainment industry is afraid to
put anything but lowest-common-denominator acts on TV, because they
figure the general public has no ability to appreciate it. When in
reality the general public has more smarts than that.
