Hello all,
I read this group from time to time and really enjoy it! I thought
that perhaps some of you could help me out with a question.
I've been playing guitar for many years. I love music, love guitar and
everything to do with it. After several years of working in the
corporate world, I've begun to wonder if I could just start over and
begin a new career in music.
While I would love to make a living as a performer, I'm not counting
on that happening.
My thought was that I could work as a music teacher. Problem is, I'm
not yet qualified to do this, though I possess a fair amount of
knowledge in music theory. I've been looking into graduate programs
for music education, though I'm unsure of their value. Is this degree
required to work in elementary and high schools? Does anyone know what
the demand is for music educators these days?
Any info regarding careers in music education would be helpful.
Maybe check out schools like Vandercook (in Chicago) which are
basically "trade schools" for band directors. Very practical and very
popular during the baby boom when music was well funded. Maybe
nowadays you need more "prestige" to compete, but many great school
band directors have come out of such schools. The types that can whip
the choir and marching band into shape, and even fix a students
trumpet or clarinet.
