1. TvTrons are filtertrons. Filtertrons have a mid-range SCOOP. This
results in the so-called, "twang," in the bottom and, "jangle and
chime," at the top.
Great for what it is, being one flavor of the Great Gretsch Sound.
Much (not all) jazz guitar is done with more mids, a more even sound
across the spectrum, to even a mid BOOST; this makes for a, "fuller,
fatter," sound.
Gibson type paf buckers, p90s single coils may be something to let
your ears listen to. Perhaps they are more in line with what you hear
when you think of, "jazz," guitar.
That is not to say that you can't play great jazz with filtertrons.
The sound will be what a filtertron delivers, be it agreeable or not
to your own aesthetic of what constitutes acceptable jazz guitar sound
from your instrument.
2. Straight into the PA loses some warmer guitar frequencies and thins
out guitar. Try some guitar amps.
So you've a double whammy going in with your current approach with
regard to Thin.
