I'm wondering how many of you guitarists play a second or third instrument?
I don't mean a bass or banjo - I mean something totally different
like keyboards, sax, flute.....etc.
Does it help (I imagine it would) or hinder your guitar playing in any way?

I compose on piano, so I play it to the extent that I can work through
my ideas and (very slowly) those of my favorite composers at tempo.
Conceptually the keyboard ties everything together better for me. I
play bass (which _is_ totally different if you're doing it right, the
presence of frets and strings notwithstanding), and the change in
perspective on harmony and rhythm can really clarify your thinking
there as well. I play drums at a basic level, too, which has a similar
effect. I've always listened very carefully to drummers.
All of the above are excellent for getting out of that technique-
driven headspace, though as Gerry pointed out you gain a real
appreciation for the rudimentary. Sometimes I get too far outside of
the technique-minded on guitar and have to lasso myself back to it,
but I benefit from it if I don't get carried away.
