I'm not a sophisticated guy in music, tastes in food or anything else,
but I am opinionated :)-
The key implied by the chords is Gmajor, but you have to play it with
the D as the primary chord...
You can use the G major pentatonic (G-A-B-D-E-G) or the D maj
pentatonic (D-E-F#-A-B-D) and if you mix 'em - voila - you have the
every note (except for the "C") of the G Major scale. No surprise
there. Just add the "C" and play out of the Gmajor scale (from D-to-D,
that is).
For folks who maintain the key is DMajor, OK, just stay away from the
C# note or use it as a passing tone or better yet, change the C# to a
"C" and you'll end up right back at Gmajor.
There are many rock tunes like this where the key seems somewhat
ambiguous. Marshall Tucker had a hit with the same progression as did
other bands.
And then you have rock tunes where not only the key is ambiguous but
you can play major or minor or switch back 'n forth and it fits... oh,
the power of power chords... the ambiguity of it all :)-
