It's a little less simple then Audacity, but Kristal at least has real-time processing.
Once again: Reaper kicks major ass. Personally, I'd bag Audacity and Kristal and use Reaper. It's a little more complex than Audacity, but it's VERY powerful. It supports real-time VST and DX instruments and plug-ins, and has a 64 bit engine. It's also very elegant and the download is under three megabytes.

There's a lot of nice apps out there for under $50.
There's Goldwave, Reaper.
I last De. I bought IK Multimedia's Stealth Plug. It's USB device. It's definitely suited for someone just starting PC recording.
I bought it more for the software bundle which is worth twice as much as the hardware. It came with Amplitube Live, Tracktion 2 and T-Rack EQ.
