I'm checking out the Mike Stern instructional video, and I see he's got a Telecaster(which I knew of), but he's put a humbucker in it. Obviously Ed Bickert has done the same. My question is: why the telecaster? If you're going to drop a different pickup in it anyway, what's the love of the Telecaster? Is it the body shape? I've never been able to get a tone that I want out of the Telecaster, and the only thing I could find useful is the access to the upper notes on the neck. When I was teaching students Jimmy Page's solo from "Stairway To Heaven", I noticed that playing the last lick at the 17th fret is easier on the Tele (which is what Page used for that solo).

However, jazzers don't tend to play up that high. What's the predisposition with the Tele?

I love teles--so plain and solid, and I think that chunky body and the
longer scale lends more "thunk" to the note

Here's an experiment I just did with a tele, trying to get a nice
"jazz tone." My tele has Charlie Christain style pickup in the neck.
It was really just a warm up, so excuse the many clams:

That is nice and unusual tone. Whose CC pu did you isntall? Do you
have any clips with that guitar playing chords?

Here you go--direct with just a little reverb. Can you guess the tune?http://chnm.gmu.edu/courses/magic/chords.mp4

Thanks Mike! That is an uncommon tone. It doesn't sound like an
archtop with a CC, but it doesn't sound like most solid bodies either.
Have you had any issues with hum? That's why the CC faded away in the
archtop world. But I suppose a tele is a lot easier to shield than an
archtop.

Tom:

It's got no more buzz than any other single coil, maybe less. It's not
really a Charlie Christian pickup--it looks like one, but other than
the single blade it's got little in common with a real CC pickup, in
terms of construction. At least as far as I know. The tone I always
want is this:

It's Rene Thomas playing with Chet Baker

Here's another: http://chnm.gmu.edu/courses/magic/one.mp3

Those clips two are my ideal in terms of guitar tone
I heard more of a grant green type sound in my own clip
