Electrifying!

Hey all,
I experienced a "first" in the ongoing "adventures in gigging" last
night. I play every week on the outdoor patio of an upscale restaurant/
bar in McAllen, TX, and this weekend we're backing up a visiting
vocalist friend of mine named Rachel Holder. Yesterday we set up in
the afternoon, then went off to eat, rehearse, and get dressed for the
gig.
When we return we pull into the parking lot next to the stage, and see
what appears to be some expensive fireworks being shot off on the
patio. On New Year's Eve some of the waiters had been doing just that
before patrons got there, so I assumed this was a warm up for the 4th
of July. Then I noticed the "fireworks" were coming from a power line
coming off the kitchen, which runs directly over the stage and out to
the transformer on a pole in the alley. The line catches on fire, and
continues to intermittently shoot showers of white hot sparks. One of
the waiters comes out screaming and holding his left eye, and of
course we assume he'd been hit by the sparks, but it turns out he
jumped and turned so quickly that he ran right into another waiter,
hitting his eye in the process. We called the fire dept and the owner
and before long there was a big crowd checking it out. The fire dept.
shut off the whole back patio area with yellow tape, so we were
postponed until they could get an electrician out to fix the problem.
We went over to the Embassy Suites Hotel and sat in with local sax
legend Rene Sandoval, which gave the folks there a chance to hear
Rachel and drummed up some business for our gig. Then they called and
said it was fixed so we went back and played the rest of the night.
Just thought you'd like to hear about it :-)
