Hi,
I looking for some thoughts and/or approaches to soloing on the tune
Four.
Thanks in advance,
Lawrie
Don't play the real book changes. Also think F minor instead of Ab maj
Paul K
What changes are you substituting and suggesting? One that first comes
to mind is instead of going from Ebma7 to Bbm7, sub with Ebm7 to Ab7
(or 13th). I see that some charts sub the Abmaj7 with Fm7 (which I
would play an Fm9 bcause of the melody line), then it goes to the Abm7
Db9.

Hi Lawrie
The real book has, if I recall correctly (maybe the new one fixes it)
Ebmaj/ % / Bbm7 / Eb7 /
Abmaj / etc
What miles did was more like
Ebmaj /% / Eb min/ % /
Fmi / etc
Bars 3 and 4 give this tune a nice touch. A minor chord moving up a minor
3rd, (and then again when you move to Abmi) whereas the RB has a hokey
II-V -I into Ab maj, which completely loses this change.

Thanks Paul. How was the tune originally written? Is it different from
the Real Book? In fact, I have 3 or 4 charts for it and they're all
slightly different.
Lawrie
I dont know how the latest Real book spells the chords, And I dont have any
idea what Miles (or whoever) brought to that session, but here's roughly the
changes I hear
EbMaj/%/Ebmi/%/
Fmin/%/Abmi/%/
Ebmaj/ F#mi B7/ Fmi/ Bb7
Ebmaj/ F#mi B7/ Fmi/ Bb7
EbMaj/%/Ebmi/%/
Fmin/%/Abmi/%/
Ebmaj/ F#mi B7/ Fmi/ Dm7b5 G7
Cmi7 F#7/ Fmi Bb7/ Ebmaj /%
In general, anything close to that is likely to work. My point was just
Bbmi7 on bar 3 is wrong.
