Over the past decade, Henry Verri’s archtops have become renowned for
their careful carving and lush acoustic sound. They’re not only huge-
voiced, but have a extraordinary archtop sound palette.
This 2000 Moderno model is the only full-18” guitar Verri has ever
built. It’s dimensions are almost exactly those of Gibson’s Super-400
(18" lower; 13-5⁄16" upper; 11-1/4" waist; 25-1/2" scale; 1-3/4" nut),
but with a wood-choice and build quality not often found in Big G’s
boxes.
A pristine Engelmann spruce top is backed up with flame-filled Maple
back, sides and two-piece neck. Ebony neo-classical fingerboard and
appointments make for an elegant, clean modern design. This is in
keeping with Verri’s philosophy that the contemporary archtop, when
carved with acoustic performance in mind, can provide another set of
colors in the pallet, while maintaining the evenness and playability
that archtop guitars are famous for.
This guitar is currently played purely acoustically, but the end-pin
is a quarter-inch jack for an easy future pickup install. The armrest
is a John Pearse model that I had altered to fit the guitar; like all
Pearse armrests, it can be easily removed.
I bought this guitar new, but immediately refretted it with slightly
smaller frets, and then put it through the Plek fret process for
ultimate fretboard consistency and low action (currently, 3/64 and
5/64 at 12th fret with 13-56 Newtone strings). The color is not well-
represented in my amateurish pictures, but it has an earthy, brick
tinge in the red transparency of the finish. Topped with a
nitrocellulose finish, this guitar is meant to be played for a long
time.
The case is a $450+ Cedar Creek design, built for this guitar. It has
Cedar Creek’s Rosewood vinyl covering over a 5-ply, double-arch
exterior. The interior is chocolate-colored crushed-velvet, and has a
large temperature/humidity gauge mounted in front of the pickbox. The
handle is substantial and well-padded and covered in soft leather.
Heavy-duty brass Providence Forge latches complete the protective
package.
Henry Verri starts at $4000 to build a guitar like this today. $3150
carefully packs and ships it insured two-day to you anywhere in the
lower 48. Please contact me for pics or further info at:
