interesting

You might want to remember that Joe was a pro guitarist in Johnstown,
PA by the time he was 15 or so.

that's the point, we all know his music, but once he was like some of
us, learning play jazz
if I understand what you're saying is that he became a jazz musician
threw listening and playing melodies more than learning harmony or
harmonic rules used in improvisation.

that's ok
but why do we learn jazz differently now?? why do we buy books?? why
don't we follow the same way of learning jazz?

There was more opportunity to play back then probably, and less books
to learn from. Pass learned originally by his father making him
figure out stuff like melodies, classical stuff, etc. on the radio,
and by playing gigs, and by listening to Parker and Powell, etc. This
is the way all jazz musicians learned how to play in those days. All
the guys that wanted to play bop listened to Parker and Bud Powell,
among others. Those were the cats. Listen and copy. Listen and
copy. Listen and copy. That's how I learned to play rock. Listened
to Bluesbreakers, Fresh Cream etc. Copy lick. Move the stylus back,
listen again, cop more of it. Move the stylus back, cop more of it.
"All your lovenist lovin'; all your kissinest kissin." I wore out
several "Beano" albums with that method. Oops, Clapton is not on the
third string, he must be on the fourth string. I think even rock is
learned from those tab books nowadays.
