interesting
You might want to remember that Joe was a pro guitarist in
Johnstown, PA by the time he was 15 or so.
that's the point, we all know his music, but once he was like some of
us, learning play jazz if I understand what you're saying is that he
became a jazz musician threw listening and playing melodies more than
learning harmony or harmonic rules used in improvisation.
He learned to play by playing. Just like we learn to speak our native
language- by speaking. We are fluent in language before we ever are
taught grammar.
that's ok but why do we learn jazz differently now?? why do we buy
books?? why don't we follow the same way of learning jazz?
It's the difference between learning and teaching. The attempt is made
to teach jazz through scales and modes and harmony, but all those things
are just attempts to codify what the ear hears. Learning to play still
happens in the ears figuratively) and the muscles.
