I think you missed the point Tony was trying to make. He said that
dividing chords into three groups would be tough to memorize and
translate into sensible chord-melody without some guidance. Is that
what you call a strawman-attack? English is not my native language but
I'm damn sure that this isn't a strawman-argument, not even in the
slightest. It's just an observation from someone WHO HAS ACTUALLY USED
THIS MATERIAL!!

I agree that memorizing chords out of a chord encyclopedia is not much
use. My objection is that JP gives all the guidance anyone would ever
need, if they are willing to study what he actually published. For
Tony to imply that JP was lax in offering constructive pedagogical
materials, in order to hype Conti's product as superior, is way bogus.

So JP should be the final word on the subject because no one could
possibly need anything more. Fine, but I sure didn't see any implied
slurs of JP or his thoroughness.

Come on. Mr Beltran didn't bring up JP to "hype" anything, you brought
up JP - to let him know that you'd outgrown it and only found learning
off records useful now. He had the temerity to opine (in response)
that Conti's approach might be better than JPs for some people.

And lo-and-behold at least one person indeed felt he benefitted from
something more than studying JPs approach. pmfan57 puts them both in
the same "must have" catagory. I assume pmfan57 was diligent in his JP
studies and hopefully he'll soon toss all his books and learn
everything from records since thats all anyone really needs.
Preferably without a guitar too - only get one once you have it all
down cold in your head, its trivial mechanics at that point and only
sissies would need it as a learning crutch.- Hide quoted text -

You wrote a rather hostile and sarcastic response regarding a
legitimate point of disagreement. I do think that learning off records
is far superior to learning from books, for players at every level. I
disagree with Tony that learning from books is a shortcut. It is a
false economy. In the short run, you learn a lick faster from a book
than you could have by taking it off the record. But in the long run,
your progress will be slowed because it will take longer to develop an
ear the longer you put it off. It will also be more expensive, because
you'll have to buy all those books in the meantime.

I know this because I have been through the process, bought all the
books, been as lazy as I could be looking for shortcuts. I made those
mistakes, and now I'm telling other people about how to avoid them and
speed up your learning curve. Perhaps the observation hits a little
too close to home for some folks. But it should not be controversial.
All the great players are always saying the same thing (except when
they have a book or video to sell).

Is learning from a teacher a shortcut? Should all learning be from
fundamental principles? What if the teacher is saying the same thing
as a good book? How would those two things be different?
