People seem to speak of modeling and such pejoratively. Why is that?

To me, a good sound is a good sound is a good sound. What are the
cons
that I may not know about, being a relative techie luddite?

I've had people from this NG compliment me on the "warm archtop sound" I
got on a certain recording. Then when I told them it was done with a
solidbody guitar, they started backpedaling. Apparently for some people,
a good sound can only be good if you get it by their preferred means.

Modeling gear can sound really good or really bad, depending on how well
it's designed and made and how well it's used. We could say the same
of... hmmm... acoustic instruments.

Acoustic instruments good.
Electric instruments only good if they have good acoustic response.
Effects bad.
Anything more than guitar-cord-amp constitutes an effect = bad.
Selected tonewood good.
Laminate bad.
Archtop good.
Solidbody = satan worship.
Vintage good.
New bad.
[insert 3 favourite guitarists here] good.
Everyone else is lame = bad.
Clean direct recording good.
Modelling worse than paederasty.
My opinion as good as yours.
Your opinion sucks, notwithstanding the above.

HTH!!
