Whatever. If that is the way he sounds ALWAYS then
I guess I should be glad I never bothered to buy any
of his music.
100x better? Jazz is NOT competition - jazz is making
music together. LC sounded like a complete showoff in
that clip.
OK, I'm intrigued by your response:
what was so bad to you about what LC played on there?
Out of place, too loud, and he ran over into Tal's space. He apparently
doesn't know how to play a phrase that ends in a fixed number of bars. Which
made him come off as rude, uncouth, unmusical.
What he played was rather pretty and would have been fine were he by himself
with a different backup band.

hi David, I offer a rebuttal:
Quote: Out of place,
Out of place? LC and Tal were featured in a dual guitar setting.
Quote: ...too loud,
The audio track on the video was re-mixed by a mastering engineer -
after the concert.
What we hear is quite likely much different than how the players heard
the stage monitors
(and the front-of-house mix). The audio on stage was probably well
balanced, since a pro PA crew
usually provides the service, a pre-gig sound check is the norm.
Quote: ...and he ran over into Tal's space.
Nope. What you refer to as "ran over into Tal's space" is known as a
"pick-up phrase" or "anticipation"
of a player's turn to solo when trading 4's, 8's, etc. with another
player; a.k.a. "playing across the bar line." (They alternated on the
tune's A,A,B,A form.) The encroaching, over-lapping phrase is common
and quite acceptable, construed as complimentary. It is typical in
call-and-response communication among players.
Quote: He apparently doesn't know how to play a phrase that ends in a
fixed number of bars.
Nope, not true. LC is a consummate pro musician. He has been hired as
a soloist for hundreds of recording sessions by some of the biggest
"names" in the music industry. He phrases brilliantly on his own
recordings as well. A masterful player with a superb command of
phrasing and feel for Time.
Quote: Which made him come off as rude, uncouth,
Your inference is erroneous. LC is one of the nicest cats in the music
biz. Read any interview with him; he is a polite gentleman with an
impeccable demeanor. He has specifically commented on the decorum and
protocol of music and respect for other players.
Quote: ..unmusical.
Unmusical?! LC is one of the finest guitarists who ever played the
instrument.
Quote: What he played was rather pretty...
Agreed. His performance has a beautiful sentiment.
Quote: ...and would have been fine were he by himself...
The two players of contrasting styles were communicating well during
the tune, both seemed to enjoy themselves, the audience approved -
indicating so with vigorous applause.
Quote: ...with a different backup band.
Yep, LC's style would easily blend with a variety of rhythm sections:
traditional or modern.
