Have you tried joning the broken ends together using a reef knot or
something?

OR like Barney Kessel did, take them and boil them in water to clean
them!

Some of us still do this. If you do it before the string is completely
dead, you can extend its life by 50% or so. Here is my original
report to this group from some years back:
=====================================================
BOILING STRINGS II

Third in a series of reports from the research laboratories of Dr.
Willie's Psychotherapy and Trucking Service.

Introduction:

Report # 1 focussed on an experiment involving boiling a set of
Thomastik-Infield Swing 13 strings. This report covers a similar
experiment with T-I Bebop (flatwound) strings.

Equipment:

A set of T-I Bebob 11s, left on the guitar, but not played a whole lot
at any one time. The guitar is a Barrington BGW-400, basically a
George Benson Ibanez copy. This is may second archtop, used for small
group jazz where a mainly electrical sound is used.

The strings were DEAD. As in I have heard better sounding rubber bands
in my life. They were ready for the trash heap.

Procedure:

I boiled the strings in water, with no other added ingredients for
five minutes, wiped them off, and restrung the guitar. I used the
water to make my wife's tea.

Results:

It worked. The zing came back to these strings. Not quite new, but
definitely now playable. They did require a couple of days of
re-tuning as they settled in, but did so faster than new strings.

Follow up on previous report:

After three weeks the aforementioned T-I Swings are still quite
usable. They appear to be fading no faster than an original set of
strings. I estimate that their life has been extended by 50% by
boiling.

Conclusion:

Boiling strings will prolong their life. How effective this would be
for other brands is unknown, so these results may not be
generalizable.

This procedure may be considered by

- poor students and the like, who must maximize every penny spent

- anyone with a set of dead strings, and no new set to replace them

- anyone with a gig coming up real soon, dead strings, and who doesn't
want to put on brand new strings that may go out of tune during a set

- eco-freaks who want to make maximum possible use of all of Mother
Earth's resources
