Yes, I once met a singer who was stronly convinced that songs were ment
to be in certain keys. Tranposing a song changed the caracter of the song,
she said. If a song had to be transposed for her to a key, that in her
opinion didn't suit the song, she would rather not sing it at all.

All kidding aside, there is some truth to this. The sound quality in
different ranges varies quite a bit. On certain instruments this is more
noticeable than on others, but for the voice the differences can be
enormous. the high and low limits of a singer's range have a different
timbre and quality than the more comfortable notes in the middle of the
range. Because of this some [most?] singers are very particular about what
key they sing a given song in. ......joe

Yes, but that was not what she ment. For instance a song was writen in E.
For her voice she thought it was best to sing it in C. But she felt that
the key of C had a different character than the key of E, which gave the
song a different character.

So like every singer she was looking for a key in which the song sounded
good for her voice. But regardless of her voice, in her opinion songs
sounded better in one key than an other.

She was not a jazz-singer by the way. We did some pop songs with her in a
band, but she had a classical background.
