He doesn't know how to change the extension. Apparently a Mac doesn't have a right-click function for Properties.

If you've got a single button mouse the equivalent of right-clicking is accomplished by holding down Control while you click and hold on the item. He could then select Get Info and rename the file in that window.
But renaming a file is as simple as selecting its text field with the mouse and typing in the new name.
