I saw the hit Italian movie, "Cinema Paradiso", when it was released in
the USA in 1990. During the end of the movie, moved to tears, and
listening to the sniffling and sobbing all around me, I turned to my
wife and said "it's the music". And it was. I knew it beyond a shadow
of a doubt, because it's lovely, it's simple, and the visual images are
not so very heart-rending alone. Ennio Morricone.
Hi Gerry,
I wouldn't give the music ALL the credit. Like you, I think this movie
is several cuts above the norm, and when DVDs became widely available I
bought my own copy, which contatins the "director's cut" on the other
side. Trust me, if you haven't seen the DC you may want to pass. In it
the main character tracks down his childhood girlfriend and they do the
wild thing even though she's already married to one of his former grade
school classmates. IMO it doesn't hang together at all and completely
ruins the poignancy of the love and youth lost, which I think is kind
of the point of the film. Also, I think one of the strengths of this
film was the rather incredible acting of the main character as a child,
as well as "Alfredo," the projectionist who becomes his mentor.
Another film by the same director is called "Tutti Sta Bene," or
"Everything's Fine." Very depressing film, with a brief role for the
same child actor, recommended as well.
As long as we're on this topic, two more terrific Italian films are
"Passione D'Amore" about love gone very creepy, and "The Garden of the
Finzi-Continis," about a wealthy Jewish family living in Italy during
the ramp up to WWII. I'd rate both these films in my top 25 best all
time.
