I may not understand your question, but these style guitars (Moore,A question Todd, If you can get the data' directly into a computer
Godin) don't have USB out - they have a proprietary 13-pin jack, the
protocol defined by Roland. I don't know if it's analog or digital
out, but I'm guessing it's analog, with 2 pins per string, and a third
pin for something else. The box (whether its a GR series or a VG
series) interprets that data and converts.
The same box has MIDI outs, that you can use to connect with the MIDI
in of your computer.
Guys like McLauglin use the GI-20, which only exists to convert the
13-pin Roland protocol to MIDI, and thus drive soft-synths running on
their computers (e.g.). I think McLaughlin uses a
Godin->GI-20->Mac->soft synth.

by a midikeyboard controller (that costs as low as $99 or so) why
can't you do the same with a midi guitar (or midi ready hex pickup
and even a 13pin to USB cable) without using, lets say a GI-20 at
all?
I wish they had a direct source pickup to computer, so you would
"not" have to buy a GI-20 or whatever.. What is your take on this?
tia thom_j.
Eventually there will be software programs that do in a PC what the Axon
or the GR units do. I don't think it's out there yet though.
It will involve either using USB from the guitar's hex pickup, like some
of the Brian Moore guitars are doing, or it will involve some sort of
other interface that translates the hex pickup's output to something the
computer understands.
I see no reason why the Axon's functions could not be accomplished on a
PC or a laptop. There would probably be an advantage too in that, if
using a software synth as well, the latency could be brought down even
lower than it already is.
AhHa ok Joey I see but I do use Reason v3 and Cubase SX3 (I have
others but havent got to the top of my program learning curve with the
other programs yet) and using my midi keyboard controller it is a real
breeze, but my keyboard (+ it plugs directly into a USB port) playing
is low-end novice at best.. I am much quicker and 'feel more at home'
via a guitar, and this is why I'm hoping I'll be able to do this real soon!
Also I have already spoke with the brainiacs at Roland and there only
advice was get a GI20 but I feel this is redundant hardware when I'm
using Reason v3 as this programs has 'every plugin midi-based sound'
you cxan imagine +much more! I can not say enough about Reason 3
& you can 'intertwine' any audio type sounds (including guitar) on any
other channel too. Then rip to a .mp3 .wav & many other file formats!
Anyway this is my reasoning for this type setup Joey, and imho I feel
it would track instantly & it also be much cheaper & easier to use via
a PC screen.. ya know?
datz my take at least.. cheers thom_j.
