Thank you Joe, I figure a little perspective from a beginner could help
this NG, but I do have to disagree with you in one aspect of the
question, "Should I pursue music?" I know that I have tremendous fun
playing and practicing music, and I'd love to make a career out of it,
but seeing as that my mother was a dancer living in the city for 25 odd
years, I'm a little weary of the artist's life...I know I wouldn't go
into it for the money, although I know its possible to break even.
Guys like Hal Galper don't help too much, if you check out his website
he has a bunch of articles talking about the sorry state of the music
bus and how the past couple decades have been worth it, but barely....
It's true that if you rely on somebody else for the answer to your
question, you probably don't have the heart or dedication to know what
you really want to do, but asking the question and answering it for
yourself is not necessarily a bad thing.
Oh, btw, I went down to see Ahmad Jamal at Blues Alley in DC, and Paul
Bollenback was opening with the Keter Betts Memorial Trio, and I
starting chatting it up with him, and it turns out that he's an
instructor at the Litchfield Jazz Camp too, and recommended that I
check it out too.
